How We Render Our Own Beef Tallow/Beef Suet

How We Render Our Own Tallow from Local Beef Suet

When it comes to handmade skincare, quality begins at the source. That’s why we render our own beef tallow in-house using suet purchased directly from trusted local farmers. By processing the fat ourselves, we can ensure every batch meets our high standards for purity, cleanliness, and performance in our skincare products.

Step 1: Preparing the Suet

We begin by carefully trimming the beef fat to remove any pieces of kidney, connective tissue, skin, or anything else that shouldn’t be included. Clean suet is the foundation of clean tallow, and this step is essential to producing a mild, non-greasy finished product.

Step 2: Dry Rendering Process

Our method is called dry rendering—meaning we do not add water or salt. While both wet and dry rendering can yield high-quality tallow, we prefer the dry method because it allows us to fully control the process.

We place the trimmed suet into a crockpot and let it render on low for 9–10 hours. This slow heat melts the fat down, separating it from the remaining solids.

Step 3: Straining and Cooling

Once rendered, we strain the liquid tallow into a stainless steel bowl and place it in the refrigerator. After the tallow solidifies, we remove it from the bowl and scrape off any visible impurities from the bottom.

Step 4: Repeat Renders as Needed

Some suet is naturally cleaner than others, so we render as many times as necessary to achieve the desired clarity and purity. The process is repeated until we have a final product that’s smooth, light in color, and free from odor.

Step 5: Storage and Use

The fully rendered tallow is then stored in our refrigerator until it's ready to be used in our handmade whipped tallow butter, tallow balm, or cold process soaps. We’ll soon be introducing even more tallow-based products—including deodorant and lip balm.

Why This Matters

Rendering our own tallow allows us to connect directly with local farms, support small-scale agriculture, and maintain full quality control. This extra step ensures that our skincare products are made with the cleanest, most nourishing tallow possible.

For customers who value transparency, tradition, and exceptional ingredients, our handcrafted process sets us apart.
